We're not stupid.

I find myself getting more and more annoyed with mascara adverts! Do you think that if a mascara was really great there would be a need to digitally post produce or shoot with lash inserts?

We know all advertising is false and created to make us buy products. There was a time that advertisements would whisper gently "Buy me, be beautiful and have all your dreams come true". Nowadays they positively snarl and spit "You'd better buy me now or else you'll never be worth anything".

Some examples from websites, TV adverts and magazines.

  1. I'm totally with you on this!! If these brand's mascaras are SO amazing, they wouldn't need to add lash inserts or enhance them post production!! xx

  2. I feel like now it has got laughable with the extremes they go to! I sit there and get so mad that some people will go out and try them expecting the adverdt result!

    It needs to stop!!

  3. SO true, having these inserts just makes me think the mascara isn't actually that good...so i won't buy it x

  4. I agree, it's ridiculous. Just as well we have beauty blogs to read with real reviews AND lashes to see, no?

  5. I totally agree with you! In fact, I was just thinking the exact same thing as I looked at the new Bourjois mascara advert - the woman's eyelashes just look obscene! Why can't they just show us what their product actually does?

  6. I totally agree. I think if one company just had the confidence in their product to go "naked" (as it were) they'd spark a revolution and seem so radical. But it seems no one has the guts.

  7. I am definitely with you on this. As you say - if their products are so amazing, so lengthening, so volumising.. why the need for lash inserts? The adverts are very deceptive.. I understand that they state last inserts are used...but they don't put it in size 18 font or shout it from the rooftops. The truth is, some of these mascaras wouldn't shift off the shelves without the use of these "enhancements". Its on the same level as airbrushing in my eyes. Rant over lol! x

  8. Some of these adverts make me laugh. They get so many extra lashes in there that it looks rediculous.

One of the reasons why I'm doing my Mascara series: you can see the real effect of a mascara.

  9. I also agree! If the company claims that their mascara is so good, then why the lash inserts???

    Does my head in!

  10. Excellent Post! I can't believe how out of touch these companies are. They aren't gaining any new fans by using these kinds of fake tactics!

  12. Ugh, I know! How are we supposed to know what the mascara actually does if they're all wearing fake lashes?

  13. I agree too !
I don't listen to adverts. Word of mouth/reviews are a lot better. And still most of the time I'll go with my gut instint anyway !
I mean come on... it's like having Jane Fonda going on about the virtues of the latest anti-wrinkle creams... never mind she's had 12 zillion facelifts !
Fancy being a company that makes money from basically conning their customers into thinking that their product works wonders... it's definitely NOT something I would be proud of to be honest.
Anyway... I thought companies were all about giving excellent customer service and valuing their customers blah blah blah... is making them feel like they're total idiots part of the package?
Could carry on for a while, but I'll spare you the rest lol.. rant over :)

  14. I couldn't agree more! It's quite annoying. Especially for those with naive teens that truly believe they are going to get ultra shiny lashes, like a certain company suggests with their mascara. These girls spend their money on an item and end up disappointed because the company lied, or "altered" as they like to call it.

Great post. Thanks for letting me vent. LOL

  15. Oh yes! I so agree with you! In France we have an advert on Tv where Eva Longoria-Parker (our dear Gabrielle Solis ♥) is praising the virtues of l'Oreal Mascara. Her lashes are so thick and look so false that she seems to wear a wig on her eyes! It makes me laugh sooooo much! Do the advertisers think we are all stupid women?

  16. This is exactly what I always rant about! I hate them when they do that!
No mascara can provide a falsies look, so they better stop doing those adverts, or even calling their mascaras with deceiving names such as "false lash effect", "the falsies", "faux cils" and so on.

  17. I completely agree with Vex in the City, it's ridiculous and pretty useless!
Noone believes these ads anyways, I don't even glance at them anymore...!

  18. I always turn to blog posts or youtube for a true representation of mascaras. The adverts and photos that company's churn out are pointless!

  19. This annoys me too! The worst offender is the new Bourjois Elastic mascara ad... The fake lashes don't even look nice!
